Montrose, CO— In a special meeting of the Montrose Board of County Commissioners, the board voted to appoint Rick Fellabaum as the acting Montrose County Coroner effective June 23, 2022. Former coroner, Dr. Thomas Canfield, M.D., resigned on June 20 citing declining health issues following a motor vehicle incident in December of 2020. Per statute, the board of county commissioners shall fill the vacancy created by the resignation by appointing an acting Montrose County Coroner.
Mr. Fellabaum has been a deputy coroner for 15 years and most recently served as the Chief Medical Investigator for the Montrose County Coroner’s Office. He is also the only candidate for coroner on the upcoming fall election. Mr. Fellabaum was born and raised in Montrose, but lived in California for four decades and served as a police officer there for 28 years. He returned to Montrose after retiring from his career in law enforcement. Mr. Fellabaum is also an active member of the Montrose County Sheriff’s Posse.
