Montrose County is governed by a three-member BOCC as mandated by the State Constitution. The commissioners are elected at large, though they represent the district of the county in which they reside, for four-year staggered terms.

Responsibilities
The BOCC provides leadership and vision in guiding Montrose County government. It is the policy-making body of county government, and as such it is charged with overseeing the organization and budgets of a wide variety of County programs to benefit citizens.
In addition to its broad fiscal responsibilities, the BOCC:
- Makes appointments to various community boards and commissions
- Acts as the Board of Equalization, Board of Social Services, Liquor License Authority, and Board of Health
- Approves intergovernmental agreements, resolutions, ordinances, voting precinct boundaries, and voting places
- Sees that the laws regarding county government are followed
- Appoints the County Attorney, who serves as legal counsel and advisor to the County
- Appoints the County Manager, who assists the BOCC in carrying out its duties
