Full Scale Airport Emergency Exercise on August 9th

County News Release

Montrose County would like to notify its community members of a full-scale emergency exercise that will take place at the Montrose Regional Airport (KMTJ) on the morning of August 9th.  The tri-annual exercise is part of the airport and county's emergency operation plan in order to be prepared for any number of incidents and comply with federal guidelines.  Community members can expect to see several emergency vehicles in the vicinity of the airport and on the runway as part of this exercise; please do not call 911 or dispatch in relation to the exercise.  There will also be an increase in activity at both the County's Emergency Operation Center (1621 6450 Road) and Montrose Memorial Hospital.

Director of Aviation Lloyd Arnold , Emergency Manager Greg Fisher, Montrose Airport Fire Department Chief Duane Ziegler, Airport Operations Manager Larry Blackwell, and Deputy John Foechterle are coordinating the exercise.  "This is a great chance to test our capabilities and validate plans," said Fisher.  "The more we are able to practice as a team means a unified and trained response when a disaster or emergency strikes our community."

“Montrose Memorial Hospital looks forward to working with our community partners while fine tuning the proficiency of our facility and staff during a time of need,” said Leann Tobin, Director of Community Engagement.

The following agencies are participating in the exercise: Montrose County Sheriff's Office, Montrose County Coroner's Office of Medical Investigation, City of Montrose, Montrose County Public Works, Montrose County Health and Human Services, Montrose County Sheriff's Posse, Montrose Police Department, Montrose Fire Protection District, Montrose Memorial Hospital, City of Montrose Public Works, Transportation and Security Administration (TSA), Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES/RACES), American Red Cross, Olathe EMS, Olathe Fire Protection District, Colorado State Patrol, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and local airlines.

For information during the exercise, please contact the public information line at 970-252-4545 or visit and  Social media posts throughout the day will be preceded with the word "EXERCISE" to avoid confusion.
